Job Description
The Facilities Maintenance Technician supports the safe, efficient operation of a healthcare facility by performing a wide range of maintenance, repair, and preventative tasks. This role focuses on minor electrical and plumbing work, building and grounds upkeep, and general handyman duties to ensure a clean, functional, and comfortable environment for staff and patients.
Responsibilities
- Conduct daily walkthroughs of hospital grounds and interior areas to assess the condition of functional systems, identify malfunctions, and determine needed repairs.
- Perform minor electrical maintenance, including replacing lightbulbs, removing and installing general light fixtures, and ensuring proper operation of basic electrical components.
- Carry out minor plumbing maintenance such as repairing or replacing leaks in drains and faucets, unclogging drains, and replacing drain hoses on washers and similar devices.
- Complete minor building and facilities repairs, including adjusting doors, fitting locks and handles, and addressing basic carpentry needs.
- Perform preventative maintenance tasks throughout the facility and document findings, observations, and completed work to support ongoing building upkeep.
- Reconfigure, install, position, and remount office furniture and workspace elements, such as furniture, wall panels, work surfaces, storage bins, lighting, and file cabinets, to accommodate user needs and optimize office space.
- Use appropriate hand tools and equipment to safely and efficiently complete maintenance and repair tasks.
- Order parts and materials as needed for maintenance work and maintain required documents, records, and logs related to repairs and preventative maintenance.
- Support hospital staff by responding to maintenance requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned to ensure the facility remains safe, functional, and well maintained.
Essential Skills
- 1–2 years of experience as a maintenance helper, maintenance technician, or in a similar facilities maintenance role.
- Hands-on experience with general maintenance repair in a building or facility setting.
- Basic carpentry skills, including the ability to perform minor repairs and adjustments to doors, locks, handles, and fixtures.
- Practical plumbing skills for minor maintenance, including leak repairs, drain unclogging, and replacement of hoses and related components.
- Basic electrical maintenance skills, such as replacing lightbulbs and installing or removing general light fixtures.
- Ability to perform preventative maintenance tasks and accurately document issues, actions taken, and follow-up needs.
- Proficiency using common hand tools and equipment safely and effectively.
- Capability to reconfigure and install office furniture and workspace elements to meet user requirements.
- Strong attention to detail in identifying facility issues during walkthroughs and inspections.
- Reliability and consistency in following schedules and completing assigned tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in facility maintenance within a hospital or healthcare environment.
- Experience in building maintenance, handyman or handymen services, or facility maintenance roles.
- Comfort working in a mental health treatment facility and maintaining professionalism in a clinical setting.
- Ability to organize and maintain records, work orders, and documentation for parts and repairs.
- Good communication skills to coordinate with staff and report maintenance needs or safety concerns.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritize multiple maintenance tasks.
- Willingness to perform a variety of minor duties as needed to support overall facility operations.
