Storytelling & Communications Coordinator

Created in 2015 by Women of Color, ELSO, Inc. provides culturally relevant education and leadership development opportunities that invite Youth of Color to Experience Life Science Outdoors (ELSO). Our mission is to teach and frame science and nature-based education through a lens that centers and elevates the stories, ways of knowing, individual needs, and lived experiences of Black and Brown communities. ELSO seeks to reduce the achievement gap in STEAMED (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, Environment, Design) education and professions while creating a sense of belonging for Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPoC) in the natural and built environments. ELSO uses a multi-cultural approach to STEAMED education that is rooted in environmental justice and cultural history. We are demonstrating a model for STEAMED education led by People of Color.
POSITION OVERVIEWThe role of the Storytelling and communications coordinator is to capture the highlights, milestones, and experiences of the ELSO Inc. organization and leverage it for promotional use and awareness for stakeholders, and various target audiences. They work closely with program directors and upper management to address communication needs, and strategize communication plans accordingly. This role includes coming up with communication campaign deliverables, objectives and timelines, while providing instructions for promotion or use, and executing plans. As well as, maintains an inventory of marketing materials for promotional and creating new marketing materials and strategies for communication as needed.
Additionally, the role of the Storytelling Coordinator is to carry out marketing campaigns and support programs and management in marketing efforts. Their duties include creating marketing campaign content like graphics, newsletters, managing and moderating social media accounts, and supporting promotional event campaigns.
ESSENTIAL DUTIESStorytelling & Communications (60%)
Website
- Champion overhaul and revamp of ELSO website, owning maintenance of domain from end-to-end
- Streamline communication channels to establish uniform messaging and brand identity
- Create graphics and produce visual materials for the organization website leading to launch
- Work with Press Release Marketing to come up with website layout, design, and execution
- Manage organization’s website & event calendar to share with various audience groups
- Gather assets and coordinate with photographers, and staff to produce updated headshots and bios of team and consulting services
- Work across organization to review language & create updated content for programs and general organizational materials
- Work with Program directors to come up with schedules, registration details, key dates, streamline info
Social Media
- Develop social media strategy and implement social media editorial calendar and plan
- Develop brand Social Media Content and implement key messaging strategies through racial equity lenses
- Manage and moderate multiple social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, and Youtube channel) and accounts (@campelso, @yourstreetyourvoice)
- Create graphics, brand guidelines, and editorial calendars to ensure the production of consistent and cohesive organizational messaging
- Responsible for publishing camp advertising info/registration for various ELSO programs/events
- Worked with Social Media Strategist to come up with messaging strategy and branded templates
- Manage Link tree, Linked In, Facebook to ensure content is up to date and aligned across communication outlets
Video, Photography, Media Coverage
- Coordinate with videographers/ photographers to capture photos and footage
- Present materials to various audiences thru multiple channels
- Coordinated with other organizations to produce and record ELSO STEAM videos
- Compile Interview Panel, media requests and releases, production team to produce ELSO videos
- Anticipates and schedule media coverage opportunities with funders/partners to maintain to craft stories around organization’s agenda and accomplishments
Newsletter and Communications
- Write copy for organizational newsletters or memos organization brand guidelines
- Create newsletters, E Blasts, announcements via Constant Contacts/ Neon CRM
- Come up with written materials Volunteer & Jobs Opportunities
- Create and publish marketing materials and digital toolkits for external partners
- Develop media relations with external organizations to obtain media and press coverage
- Develop materials to educate staff on communication practices
Design
- Responsible for curating Collateral including: Brochures, T-Shirts, Logos, Swag Bags, Business Cards, Postcards, Envelopes, Banners
Community Engagement & Program Support (20%)
- Align with program directors to promote STEAM learning opportunities and develop standardized registration processes
- Create and maintain inventory of marketing materials and sharing out instructions of how to use accordingly
- Coordinate with specific parties to come up with new marketing materials and resources
- Visit event sites for collecting content relating to programs and camp sessions
- Establish cooperative relationships with programming staff, project management and grants management team
- Anticipate and schedule media coverage opportunities with funders to maintain favorable public and stakeholder views of the organization’s agenda and accomplishments
- Responsible for community outreach engagement thru various communication outlets
- Ensure Registration + Application Process are accessible for public or qualified candidates
- Coordinate with Translator for Spanish Translation for various media projects
Fundraising & Development (20%)
- Support with planning and execution of fundraising campaigns and events
- Support with strategy planning for promotional campaigns and donor engagement
- Create graphics, weekly posts, stories, and newsletters for campaigns
- Responsible for publishing campaign content and delivery via communication channels to targeted audiences
- Support development of EOY appeal, text, visuals
- Collaborate with Fundraising team and Organizational staff to develop Impact Report applied to donor engagement
- Research and study analytics of engagement to improve messaging techniques and practices
- Prepare Donor gifts, thank you notes to sustain contributor relationships
- Develop Kickstarter campaign page
- Develop online store and organized shop page
- Help develop promotional Materials
- Facilitate visual storytelling for promotional purposes thru website and social media platforms
Teamwork
- Coordinate Vendors with camp/office administration
- Duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS- 21+ High School Graduate, or GED complete, can be current college, with design experience
- Must be able to pass a background check as required by the Oregon Department of Education for positions that work directly with youth (Oregon State Department of Education Disqualifying Crimes 342.143) and have clean driving record for 1 year prior to application
