Job Title: Sheet Metal Technician / HVAC ForemanJob DescriptionThis role combines hands-on sheet metal fabrication and HVAC ductwork installation with opportunities to lead field crews on commercial and industrial projects. You will lay out, fabricate, assemble, install, modify, and repair sheet metal products and HVAC components on new construction and tenant finish jobsites. The position requires strong blueprint reading skills, proficiency with hand and power tools, and a commitment to producing high-quality, safe installations on schedule, including air-cooled DX, condenser-water, and chilled-water systems.
Responsibilities- Install, fabricate, and repair sheet metal ductwork, HVAC components, hangers, fittings, and related systems in accordance with blueprints, specifications, and industry standards.
- Read and interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, shop drawings, sketches, and product specifications to determine layout, sequence of operations, and methods of fabrication and installation.
- Lay out and mark dimensions, reference lines, and cut lines on sheet metal materials using templates, measuring tools, squares, and gauges.
- Select appropriate gauge and type of sheet metal, including galvanized, stainless steel, and aluminum, based on project requirements and design specifications.
- Set up and operate fabrication equipment such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, and routers to cut, bend, form, and shape sheet metal components.
- Use hand and power tools, including saws, grinders, drills, and routers, safely and efficiently to prepare, modify, and assemble sheet metal and HVAC components.
- Trim, file, grind, deburr, and smooth surfaces, and weld, solder, braze, rivet, screw, or bond components together to create secure and sealed assemblies.
- Assemble ductwork and HVAC system components, ensuring proper fastening, sealing, and alignment for optimal performance and code compliance.
- Inspect assemblies and completed installations for conformance to specifications, quality standards, and mechanical and architectural plans.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with OSHA regulations and site-specific safety requirements.
- Communicate effectively with foremen, project managers, general contractors, and other trades to coordinate work, resolve installation issues, and maintain acceptable job progress.
- Conduct and oversee the installation of HVAC systems and components on new construction and tenant finish jobsites when serving in a foreman capacity.
- Provide clear direction to mechanics and helpers to facilitate timely and accurate completion of tasks and project milestones.
- Train new helpers through hands-on example and demonstration of proper installation, safety, and quality practices.
- Coordinate labor and crew assignments for HVAC system installations in an efficient and controlled manner to meet project schedules.
- Measure and order materials needed for the completion of projects, ensuring accurate quantities and timely delivery.
- Operate equipment such as scissor lifts, ladders, and other access or material-handling tools required for HVAC system installation.
- Complete necessary documentation, including timesheets, invoices, and electronic communications, in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner.
- Monitor and maintain clean work areas on jobsites, promoting safe and organized working conditions.
- Perform regular vehicle maintenance checks to ensure reliable transportation to jobsites across the DFW metro area.
Essential Skills- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1+ years of hands-on experience as a sheet metal technician, mechanic, or installer in a commercial or industrial setting; 3+ years of experience to qualify as a mechanic and 1+ year of experience as a helper.
- 2+ years of related work experience in HVAC or sheet metal installation for foreman-level responsibilities.
- Ability to read and understand mechanical and architectural plans as they relate to HVAC systems, ductwork, and sheet metal layouts.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, isometric drawings, and shop drawings.
- Proficiency with hand tools and power tools used in sheet metal installation and fabrication.
- Proficiency in operating sheet metal fabrication equipment such as shears, brakes, presses, forming rolls, and routers.
- Familiarity with HVAC duct installation and standard industry fabrication and installation practices.
- Working knowledge of HVAC systems, their components, and functions, including air-cooled DX, condenser-water, and chilled-water systems.
