LEAD MAINTENANCE MECHANIC (PLUMBING)*
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Oversees and performs plumbing work; does related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Under the general supervision of a higher level employee, oversees and performs a variety of adjustments, inspections, installations, and repairs to plumbing work. Work is performed with considerable independence and is initiated by oral instructions or written work orders. The incumbent plans and oversees the work of a general maintenance crew. MUST BE FAMILAIR WITH DEPARTMENT of HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPEMENT rules and procedures.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only) Oversees and participates in the installation, repair and maintenance of plumbing fixtures, work stands, toilets, showers, drains, sinks, radiators, kitchen and other equipment requiring plumbing corrections to ensure that equipment works efficiently and effectively; Oversees and performs the repair and replacement of piping systems, valves and fittings to extend its useful life and to keep systems and equipment operating properly; Oversees and participates in the installation of sewage connections to ensure that work is performed in accordance with trade standards; Performs an immediate inspection in the event of a plumbing or related emergency and takes proper corrective action; Assigns daily work schedule to subordinate personnel to allocate resources and makes routine inspection of assigned work to ensure that it is completed in accordance with trade standards; Plans repairs and alterations making estimates of material costs and staffing requirements so that personnel and equipment will be efficiently and effectively used; May supervise the performance of service contracts and maintenance contracts to insure that work is performed in accordance with contract specifications; Recommends new methods and equipment to improve work performance; Performs routine and emergency repairs and maintenance, both scheduled and in response to emergency situations as required; Insures that work areas are kept in a clean, orderly and safe condition;

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only) (Continued) Prepares personnel time sheets, requisitions materials and supplies, and prepares written reports pertaining to work projects; Maintains records of work completed; Prepares written evaluations of subordinates. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES: Thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques and terminology associated with the plumbing trade; thorough knowledge of the accident and safety precautions of the trade; thorough knowledge of the applicable provisions of the state codes and such local codes as apply to the trade; ability to plan, layout and oversee the work of others; ability to work effectively with others; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to work independently; initiative in planning and completing plumbing repair work; initiative; resourcefulness; good judgement; physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position. MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Either (a) graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and four (4) years plumbing experience which must have included installation, maintenance and repair work, two (2) years of which involved the layout of work; or (b) graduation from a two year post high school or trade school course and two years experience as described in (a), one of which involved the layout of work; or (c) eight (8) years experience as described above, two (2) of which included the specialized experience; or (d) a satisfactory equivalent combination of the foregoing training and experience.
