Provides shift supervision and monitors day to day assessment, treatment and services within the Respiratory department. Develops and implements the Respiratory Care Plan based upon Clinical Practice Guidelines. Conducts respiratory assessments of patient as indicated within scope of practice. Administers medications to the respiratory system, and performs various clinical modalities as prescribed by physician order, in accordance with current practice. Provides humidification of the respiratory system through the use of aerosol therapy, heat-moisture exchangers, heated humidifiers, mist tents, simple humidifiers etc. in accordance with current practice. Manages the mechanical ventilator and appropriate monitoring devices of all patients requiring mechanical ventilation. Assists physicians and nurses in the management of patients receiving respiratory services; and provides for the ventilation of patients requiring ventilation support during emergency and special procedures. Continually monitors the effectiveness and potential adverse effects of delivered therapy to determine improvement in patient condition or prevent patient injury. Recognizes and reports signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect to physician(s) and Department Director and/or appropriate agency. Participates in rounding and proactively responds to patient needs to improve patient outcomes and positively impact overall patient experience. Communicates clearly and provides explanation of care in a way that can be easily understood by patients and their families. Communicates and interacts with patients, families and others in a caring, empathetic, courteous, and respectful manner. Communicates effectively and works with physicians and/or other members of the interdisciplinary team in meeting patient needs. Promotes a professional image and acts as an ambassador inside and outside the organization. Takes ownership and demonstrates service excellence principles in all interactions with the patient, physician and others. Ensures patient's safety, dignity and privacy at all times. Assists Director in the maintenance and monitoring of budget and acquisition of capital equipment. Accurately scans and records equipment and supplies to ensure appropriate charges and inventory control. Actively participates in improving operational efficiency, effectiveness and achievement of established goals/performance metrics (i.e., wait times, turnaround times etc. Optimizes use of supplies, equipment and services, ensuring a high level of clinical care at the lowest cost. Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising quality or the services delivered. Assists Director/Manager with investigation and corrective/disciplinary actions. Assists with interviewing, selection and evaluation of staff. Assists with work prioritization and assignment of staff. Functions as a resource person for staff members and provides education as necessary. Willingly shares knowledge/expertise and assists co-workers.
