Assistant Controller – Property Management

NJCDC is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced individual to join the fiscal team as Assistant Controller. This position will have significant responsibility in the area of property management accounting, as well as assisting the CFO in other areas as described below. The successful candidate will manage all accounting aspects for commercial/residential properties, ensuring financial accuracy, compliance, and strategic financial planning.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management and Reporting
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records for all properties.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
- Oversee general ledger activities, including journal entries and reconciliations.
- Ensure timely and accurate recording of all transactions.
Budgeting and Forecasting
- Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and periodic forecasts.
- Monitor and report on budget variances, providing analysis and recommendations.
- Collaborate with property managers to gather and verify budget data.
Tenant and Lease Administration
- Manage tenant billing and collections, ensuring timely receipt of payments.
- Oversee lease accounting, including rent roll management and CAM reconciliations.
- Handle tenant inquiries and resolve any billing disputes.
Compliance and Audit
- Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards and regulations.
- Prepare for and assist with internal and external audits.
- Maintain documentation for audit trails and regulatory compliance.
Accounts Payable and Receivable
- Process accounts payable and receivable transactions accurately and timely.
- Reconcile bank statements and manage cash flow.
- Monitor and manage vendor relationships and payments.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BA or BS in Accounting, Finance or related fields.
- 5-7 years of accounting experience, with experience in a non-profit affordable housing environment or preferred as well as experience in accrual-based accounting for residential properties preferred.
- Accounting and compliance experience with various funding and voucher programs (i.e. HUD, HOME CDBG, FHLB, LIHTC, DCA Project Based Vouchers, and Section 8 Vouchers)
- Knowledge of property management functions
- Thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and fixed asset accounting.
- Demonstrated experience with preparing financial statements and monthly variance analysis.
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Technical skills required – Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
- Excellent Interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work within a team-based environment in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks.
- Planning and organizational skills.
- Yardi experience preferred.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $90,000.00 - $100,000 per year
