Job Description and Qualifications
J H Operating Company, LLC, an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management firm primarily supporting the upstream and midstream oil and gas industry, has an opening for an experienced Piping Design Checker in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The Checker will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, quality, and compliance of pipe design drawings and related documentation for the Upstream and Midstream Oil & Gas sectors. This position requires an eye for detail, extensive knowledge of piping systems, a thorough understanding of industry standards, codes, and best practices to verify that all designs meet project specifications and safety requirements.
The role will support the team on primarily new capital industrial infrastructure projects, such as multi-well production facilities, large central gathering stations, oil terminals, and saltwater disposals. The role and skill set are key to expanding JH’s services to the midstream and upstream sectors.
Primary responsibilities of this role include:
- Review piping design drawings, including isometric drawings, piping plans, and layouts, for accuracy and completeness, with a focus on operational safety and constructability.
- Ensure that all designs comply with both JH internal and industry standards, such as ASME, API, and other relevant codes.
- Identify and resolve any errors, discrepancies, or design issues between P&IDs, 3D models, and vendor equipment drawings.
- Verify dimensions, materials, and connection details to ensure compatibility and functionality of piping systems.
- Verify the accuracy of material take-offs (MTOs) and bills of materials (BOMs) to ensure alignment with project requirements.
- Perform process flow checks to ensure that the design accurately reflects the intended process as specified by the Project Engineers.
- Collaborate with Engineers, Project Managers, and Pipe Designers to resolve design issues and provide constructive feedback for improvement.
- Ensure all documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant with project specifications and safety regulations.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, standards, and best practices to ensure the highest level of quality control.
- Assist in developing and maintaining internal piping design standards and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- 15+ years progressive experience in pipe design and checking.
- Proficient in AutoCAD, AutoDesk Plant 3D, and NavisWorks
- Ability to read and interpret laser scans of jobsites.
- BlueBeam and/or Adobe commenting tools for redlining drawings.
- Working knowledge and understanding of mechanical equipment when reviewing vendor drawings.
- Familiarity with: API, ASME and ANSI standards.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to interact effectively with project team members and other staff.
- Ability to work unsupervised.
- Ability to pass an in-depth background check and drug screening.
Preferred:
- 10+ years Autodesk Plant 3D experience
- Strong background in oil & gas or petrochemical plants
