Job Description
The Maintenance Mechanic maintains and repairs plant equipment in a steel fabrication environment, with a strong focus on mechanical systems, welding, fabrication, and structural integrity. This role troubleshoots mechanical and structural issues, designs and implements repairs, and supports process improvements to keep production equipment safe, reliable, and efficient.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot structural issues within the plant and design effective repairs that meet operational and safety requirements.
- Partner with the maintenance team to identify and implement process improvements that strengthen plant structures and equipment reliability.
- Perform mechanical repairs on hydraulic systems, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
- Perform mechanical repairs on pneumatic systems and related components.
- Diagnose and repair CNC equipment to restore accurate and consistent operation.
- Maintain and repair extrusion machinery, including mechanical components and supporting systems.
- Perform mechanical repairs on heavy equipment used in the steel mill environment.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair overhead cranes to ensure safe lifting and material handling operations.
- Perform MIG and TIG welding to repair and fabricate metal components and structures.
- Execute vertical, horizontal, and overhead welding tasks in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
- Apply AWS code requirements when performing welding and structural repair work.
- Read and interpret blueprints and schematics to guide repairs and fabrication tasks.
- Fabricate new parts and components to repair equipment and assemble machines back to working order.
- Conduct preventive maintenance on equipment to reduce unplanned downtime and extend asset life.
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues within the plant, identify root causes, and implement durable solutions.
- Assist with PLC troubleshooting as needed to support automation and control systems.
- Document maintenance activities and communicate equipment status and repair needs to the maintenance team and leadership.
Essential Skills
- Proven ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues within an industrial plant environment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude for repairing hydraulics and pneumatic systems.
- Hands-on experience with mechanical repairs of CNC equipment and extrusion machinery.
- Experience maintaining and repairing heavy equipment and overhead cranes.
- Proficiency in MIG and TIG welding for repair and fabrication work.
- Ability to perform vertical, horizontal, and overhead welding safely and effectively.
- Capability to work in alignment with AWS code requirements for welding and structural repairs.
- Competence in reading and interpreting blueprints and mechanical schematics.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance on industrial equipment.
- Basic understanding of pneumatics, hydraulics, and related mechanical systems.
- Ability to assist with PLC troubleshooting in support of maintenance activities.
- Solid work history demonstrating reliability, strong work ethic, and commitment to safety.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Any secondary schooling or technical education is helpful but not required.
- Mechatronics degree or similar technical education is beneficial, especially for candidates with limited experience.
- Experience in fabrication, including cutting, fitting, and assembling metal components.
- Familiarity with industrial steel mill operations or heavy manufacturing environments.
- Comfort working with large-scale equipment and complex mechanical systems.
- Willingness to develop skills across disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, and automation.
