Job Title: Construction Laborer
Job Description
This role supports a variety of commercial construction projects within approximately 60 miles of Ames and Fort Dodge. You will work as a general laborer with opportunities to focus on carpentry, concrete work, steel erection, and welding, depending on your skills and interests. The position involves all phases of construction, including remodels and new building projects, and requires flexibility to perform different tasks on the job site as project needs change.
Responsibilities
- Perform general construction labor on commercial projects, including both remodels and new construction.
- Carry out demolition work safely and efficiently, including removal of existing structures and materials.
- Assist with earthwork and excavations, such as site preparation, trenching, and grading.
- Place and finish concrete for foundations, slabs, walls, and other structural elements.
- Prepare and interpret basic layouts to support framing, concrete, and other construction activities.
- Erect framework for structures, including walls, floors, and roofs, using appropriate carpentry techniques.
- Install ceilings and walls, including framing, sheathing, and related finish work as needed.
- Assist with steel erection and welding tasks, following instructions and safety procedures.
- Signal equipment operators to guide movement of materials and machinery safely on the job site.
- Use hand tools and power tools safely and correctly for cutting, fastening, measuring, and assembly tasks.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper handling and storage of tools and materials.
- Work collaboratively in crews of varying sizes, following directions from supervisors and experienced tradespeople.
- Adapt to different roles on the job site, taking on tasks in carpentry, concrete, or general labor based on project needs.
- Follow all safety policies and procedures, including use of personal protective equipment and adherence to site rules.
- Transport and secure personal tools and equipment needed for daily work.
Essential Skills
- At least 1+ years of experience in construction, either residential or commercial, or a strong desire to enter the trade with proven hand and power tool experience.
- Hands-on experience with general construction tasks such as carpentry, framing, and concrete work.
- Proficiency in using basic hand tools, including tool pouches, hammer, tape measure, speed square, and utility knife.
- Experience operating common power tools safely and effectively.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly throughout the workday.
- Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and job site environments.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to reach various job sites.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, taking direction and contributing to group tasks.
- Strong attention to safety and willingness to follow established procedures and guidelines.
- Dependable work ethic with consistent attendance and punctuality.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 2+ years of commercial construction experience or 3+ years of residential construction experience, particularly in carpentry, framing, and concrete work.
- Experience with finish carpentry and rough carpentry on commercial or residential projects.
- in steel erection or welding on construction sites.
- Interest in developing skills in a specific trade area, such as carpentry, concrete, or steel, with a desire to specialize over time.
- Willingness to pursue continuing education and training opportunities related to construction trades.
- Comfort reading basic measurements and layouts using a tape measure and layout tools.
