Job Title: Automation Technician
Job Description
The Automation Technician improves and maintains production equipment and automation systems to increase efficiency, reliability, and uptime. This role designs and builds electrical and mechanical components, diagnoses and repairs industrial systems, and drives continuous improvement initiatives in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Improve existing equipment and automation systems to increase efficiency, reliability, and uptime across production operations.
- Rewire control panels and update control systems to meet evolving process and safety requirements.
- Install PLC racks and related hardware to support new and existing automation projects.
- Design and develop new components, equipment, and machinery that support production goals and process improvements.
- Diagnose root causes of mechanical and electrical issues and implement effective corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Design and build electrical cabinets and associated control systems for industrial applications.
- Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods and processes to enhance productivity and quality.
- Perform metal fabrication using milling machines, lathes, CNC equipment, welders, grinders, and related tools.
- Diagnose and repair industrial electrical systems, including wiring, controls, and power distribution.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical systems and components used in production equipment.
- Work independently and as part of a team on continuous improvement projects focused on safety, efficiency, and reliability.
- Communicate project updates, timelines, and results clearly to cross-functional teams and leadership.
- Collaborate closely with engineering teammates to tackle complex technical challenges and share best practices.
Essential Skills
- Maintenance knowledge with direct experience working in automation environments.
- Experience with robotics, CNC machinery, pneumatics, PLCs, and industrial electrical and mechanical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical schematics accurately.
- Strong skills in electrical wiring and working with electrical schematics and control circuits.
- Proficiency in PLC troubleshooting and working with PLC-based control systems.
- Solid understanding of manufacturing principles, production equipment, and process flows.
- Technical certificate in industrial technology or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
- Experience working in a manufacturing or production environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify root causes and implement robust solutions.
- Effective time management skills to balance multiple projects and priorities.
- Ability to contribute to continuous improvement and process implementation initiatives.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Familiarity with CAD software for designing components, layouts, or control systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for documentation, reporting, and communication.
- Training or certifications in continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience with process improvement and process implementation in manufacturing settings.
- Comfort working both independently and collaboratively within cross-functional engineering teams.
Work Environment
This role is part of a collaborative engineering team that includes other engineers and coordination support, with a strong emphasis on tackling challenges together. Approximately 90% of the work takes place on the production floor and 10% in an office setting. The environment is non-climate-controlled, typical of a busy manufacturing facility, and involves regular interaction with industrial equipment and tools. Job Type & LocationThis is a Permanent position based out of Tell City, IN.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $71000.00 - $86300.00/yr.
