Job Title: Heavy Assembler
Job Description
The Heavy Assembler assembles mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components onto snow and ice control equipment such as salt spreaders and dump bodies. This role reads and interprets blueprints and work instructions, uses a wide range of hand and power tools, and ensures that all assembled products meet established quality, safety, and performance standards in an industrial manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Assemble large mechanical components, including engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical wiring, onto snow and ice control equipment such as salt spreaders and dump bodies.
- Use hand tools, power tools, torque wrenches, and other assembly equipment to fasten parts securely and safely.
- Fit, trim, align, and adjust parts and subassemblies to meet engineering specifications and quality standards.
- Read and follow assembly instructions, blueprints, parts lists, and work orders to complete each job accurately and on time.
- Identify and gather required parts, subassemblies, tools, and materials before and during the assembly process.
- Inspect assembled components and completed units for accuracy, functionality, and conformance to specifications.
- Report defects, nonconformances, or functional issues to supervisors or appropriate team members for resolution.
- Follow all safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and safe handling of tools and materials.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area to support safety and efficiency.
- Work closely with welders, painters, and other production staff to coordinate tasks and ensure smooth workflow across departments.
- Communicate effectively with team members and leadership regarding progress, issues, and resource needs.
- Handle large steel parts and subassemblies with care, using precision and strength to position and secure components.
- Support production goals by working efficiently, meeting daily output expectations, and adapting to changing priorities as needed.
Essential Skills
- Manufacturing experience in an industrial or production environment.
- Experience in heavy assembly, including working with large mechanical and structural components.
- Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively for assembly tasks.
- Proficiency in mechanical assembly, including fitting, aligning, and securing parts to specification.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, assembly instructions, parts lists, and work orders.
- Ability to use measuring tools to verify dimensions and ensure accuracy of assembled components.
- General labor experience in a manufacturing or production setting.
- Physical ability to lift 50+ pounds frequently and stand for extended periods.
- Comfort working with mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components in a production environment.
- Capability to follow detailed instructions and standard operating procedures consistently.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure quality, safety, and proper function of assembled equipment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with welders, painters, and other production staff.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Previous experience with heavy equipment or mechanical assembly.
- Familiarity with torque equipment and pneumatic tools.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes within an industrial setting.
- Experience following structured work orders and production schedules.
- Comfort working around welding equipment, hydraulic systems, and overhead cranes.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate with cross-functional production teams.
- Reliability and flexibility to work overtime as needed to support production demands.
