The position serves as a key liaison between patients, nursing staff, and the dietary department to ensure that dietary needs, food allergies, and meal preferences are met while maintaining high standards of food safety, sanitation, and infection control.
Responsibilities- Provide courteous and responsive customer service to patients, hospital staff, and guests throughout the meal service process.
- Communicate effectively with patients, nursing staff, and dietary personnel to ensure accurate meal orders and patient satisfaction.
- Deliver meal carts to nursing units and assist patients with meal setup at the bedside, ensuring comfort and safety.
- Verify that all meals comply with prescribed dietary restrictions, food allergies, and hospital dietary guidelines.
- Collect soiled trays promptly from patient rooms and nursing units, and transport them safely to the dietary department.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized patient care and dietary work environment by following sanitation and infection control procedures.
- Monitor, inventory, and restock nourishment areas and floor stock supplies to ensure consistent availability of food and beverages.
- Operate dietary and meal service technology, including menu systems and basic computer programs, accurately and efficiently.
- Perform dishwashing duties, including cleaning dishes, utensils, and food service equipment according to established procedures.
- Clean and sanitize food service equipment, work areas, and storage spaces, following food safety and sanitation standards.
- Carry out general janitorial tasks within the dietary department to support a safe and hygienic work environment.
- Support cafeteria operations by providing cashier services, handling transactions accurately, and assisting customers in a professional and courteous manner.
- Promote a positive patient experience by demonstrating compassion, empathy, and attention to detail in all interactions.
- Protect patient privacy by maintaining confidentiality and following HIPAA guidelines during all patient communications.
- Collaborate with team members and nursing staff to resolve issues related to meal service, special requests, and dietary needs in a timely manner.
Essential Skills- Proven customer service skills, preferably in a healthcare, food service, hospitality, or similar environment.
- Experience with food service operations such as dishwashing, meal delivery, or cafeteria service.
- Knowledge of patient diets, food allergies, and dietary restrictions, including the ability to follow prescribed diet orders.
- Understanding of food safety, sanitation, and infection control procedures in a healthcare or food service setting.
- Ability to operate dietary menu systems and basic computer programs accurately.
- Strong verbal communication skills to interact effectively with patients, nurses, and dietary staff.
- Demonstrated compassion, patience, and empathy when working with patients and their families.
- Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work effectively in a busy hospital setting while maintaining a professional and positive attitude.
- Physical ability to stand and walk for extended periods, push meal carts, and lift up to 25–30 pounds as needed.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA guidelines when interacting with patients and handling patient information.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience in healthcare, food service, hospitality, or customer service.
- Dietary or nutrition knowledge related to hospital or clinical food service.
- Food safety and sanitation knowledge, including familiarity with regulatory standards.
- ServSafe Food Handler Certification preferred.
- Bilingual skills, particularly English/Spanish, are a plus.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with patients, staff, and guests.
