Registered Nurse – General Medical | Correctional Facility

Important: This is a General Medical Registered Nurse position. Candidates with primarily Mental Health/Psychiatric nursing experience are not being considered.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to provide professional general medical care to individuals housed in a state-operated correctional facility. The RN will provide direct patient care, administer medications and treatments, monitor patient conditions, respond to medical emergencies, maintain accurate medical documentation, and collaborate with physicians and other healthcare staff.
The selected candidate must be available to work full-time. This is not a PRN position.
The normal schedule is Sunday through Wednesday, 2:00 PM–12:00 AM, but candidates must be flexible with their scheduled days, as schedules may change based on facility operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide professional nursing care to patients housed within a state-operated correctional facility.
- Assess, observe, document, and monitor patients' symptoms, reactions, and progress.
- Conduct nursing rounds and obtain and document vital signs.
- Administer prescribed medications, treatments, and immunizations.
- Monitor patients in restricted or isolated housing areas according to required protocols.
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies and provide first aid and emergency medical care.
- Contact physicians and arrange transportation to emergency departments when medically necessary.
- Assist physicians with patient evaluations and diagnostic health assessments.
- Develop, review, and implement patient care plans.
- Provide patient education regarding medical conditions, treatments, medications, and referrals.
- Perform specialized nursing procedures as required, which may include:
- IV therapy
- Wound care
- Oxygen therapy
- Dialysis
- Blood transfusions
- CPR
- Tube feeding
- Catheterization
- Suctioning
- Phlebotomy
- Medication administration, including controlled substances
- Provide direct nursing care to bedridden patients when assigned.
- Participate in and/or coordinate emergency response activities, including Code Blue procedures.
- Work collaboratively with LPNs, healthcare aides, physicians, and other facility personnel.
- Maintain accurate and timely medical records, medication records, treatment documentation, and incident reports.
- Maintain accurate inventory of medications, controlled substances, medical equipment, and supplies.
- Coordinate outpatient appointments and prescription refills.
- Order medical supplies and equipment as needed.
- Participate in staff meetings, education, training, and problem-solving teams.
- Assist with orientation and training of new healthcare staff.
- Serve as a lead worker or provide direction to other healthcare staff when assigned.
- Perform other nursing and administrative duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Ohio Board of Nursing.
- General medical/clinical nursing experience.
- Ability to provide direct patient care in a structured healthcare environment.
- Strong assessment, documentation, communication, and clinical decision-making skills.
- Ability to respond appropriately to medical emergencies.
- Ability to work with medical equipment and perform standard nursing procedures.
- Ability to work full-time and maintain flexibility with scheduled workdays.
- BLS/CPR certification required.
