Responsibilities
- Document vital signs accurately and consistently for each patient visit.
- Prepare patients and examination rooms for exams and procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment in accordance with established standards.
- Provide essential patient care assistance to support the physician’s daily activities, including greeting patients, taking vital signs, and preparing examination rooms.
- Assist physicians with procedures by documenting medical history, case notes, and relevant clinical information in the patient record.
- Relay instructions from the physician or nurse practitioner to the patient or authorized representative clearly and accurately.
- Collect patient data in person and by phone, document patient concerns, and ensure all relevant information is recorded in the electronic medical record.
- Record messages and care provided in the electronic medical record for physician or nurse practitioner review.
- Take complete and accurate messages, route messages to the appropriate area, and support direction, order, and referral entry as needed.
- Set up patient cases in the electronic medical record system, including basic registration and updating of demographic information.
- Accurately document medical information in patient records, ensuring completeness and compliance with documentation standards.
- Track and route test results to physicians and nurse practitioners for timely review.
- Communicate test results to patients when directed and deemed appropriate by the physician or nurse practitioner.
- Facilitate patient care activities by scheduling ancillary tests, reinforcing patient education, and performing triage as appropriate and directed by the physician or nurse practitioner.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of medical, office, and pharmaceutical supplies, and restock as needed.
- Use basic computer skills to work proficiently within the electronic health record system for daily documentation, order entry, and communication related to patient care.
- Process orders appropriately in the electronic medical record and support overall patient flow and clinic efficiency.
- Collaborate with clinical and administrative staff to ensure a positive patient experience and smooth operations in a high-volume urgent care environment.
Essential Skills
- At least 1 year of experience as a medical assistant.
- Bilingual communication skills to effectively interact with diverse patient populations.
- Proficiency in taking and documenting vital signs.
- Experience preparing patients and examination rooms for exams and procedures.
- Ability to document medical history, case notes, and patient concerns accurately.
- Skill in relaying clinical instructions from physicians or nurse practitioners to patients or authorized persons clearly and professionally.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and electronic health record systems for documentation, order entry, and communication.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain a clean, safe, and well-stocked clinical environment.
- Ability to track, route, and communicate test results under the direction of physicians or nurse practitioners.
- Experience supporting triage, patient education reinforcement, and coordination of ancillary tests in a clinical setting.
- Basic computer literacy and ability to navigate healthcare software efficiently.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume medical environment.
Work Environment
This position is based in a busy urgent care setting that sees approximately 50–100 patients per day. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with flexibility to work until 6:00 p.m. if needed and opportunities for overtime in different specialties. The environment is fast-paced and requires consistent use of electronic health record systems and other clinical technologies for documentation, order entry, and communication. Staff work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other clinical team members to manage a high patient volume while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe facility.
