Job Title: Machine Builder
Job Description
This role centers on building custom automated production machinery from engineering drawings and specifications, assembling mechanical and electrical components, verifying equipment performance, and supporting machine startup before equipment ships to customers. You will work on one-of-a-kind automation equipment for a variety of industries, occasionally travel to customer sites for installation and startup support, and play a critical part in ensuring build quality, on-time delivery, and customer satisfaction in a high-skill, high-visibility environment.
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret detail and assembly drawings, electrical schematics, and pneumatic diagrams to build custom automation equipment with minimal supervision.
- Assemble mechanical components and subassemblies from the ground up, including fitting and installing purchased components into custom machines.
- Perform mechanical setup and alignment to ensure precise operation of automated equipment.
- Verify equipment performance against engineering specifications and customer requirements.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, and basic electrical issues during the build, verification, and startup process.
- Recommend and implement corrective actions when equipment does not perform to specification.
- Support machine optimization and startup activities, including assisting with customer runoff when required.
- Travel to customer sites to support equipment installation, startup, and field modifications as needed.
- Use a variety of hand tools and assembly equipment safely and efficiently in a manufacturing environment.
- Operate hoists and slings to load, unload, and position large machine components when required.
- Contribute independently to active build projects and collaborate with the technical team to meet project timelines.
- Participate in process improvement efforts related to assembly, machine optimization, and manufacturing practices.
Essential Skills
- Minimum 2 years of experience reading and interpreting assembly drawings, electrical schematics, and pneumatic diagrams; 5+ years preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of mechanical assembly experience building equipment or complex assemblies; 3+ years preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of mechanical and pneumatic troubleshooting experience; 5+ years preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of experience reading electrical drawings and performing basic electrical troubleshooting on automated equipment.
- Minimum 2 years of regular professional use of hand tools and assembly equipment in a manufacturing or machine-building environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently from technical documents and engineering specifications without close supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and spatial reasoning when working from drawings and schematics.
- Precision and patience in completing complex mechanical assemblies without step-by-step instructions.
- Systematic problem-solving skills and the ability to remain composed when builds do not initially perform to specification.
- Comfort working around industrial electrical systems and the ability to trace circuits to identify the source of issues.
- Safety awareness in a manufacturing environment, including proper use of tools, hoists, and PPE.
- Physical ability to stand, bend, and twist frequently and lift up to 50 lbs.
