Role: Geotechnical Engineer

We are expanding, and we're looking for an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to lead the development of our Geotechnical Services Department. This is a unique opportunity for an engineer who enjoys technical challenges, values strong client relationships, and wants to play a meaningful role in building something from the ground up. You'll oversee geotechnical investigations and engineering analyses while partnering with company leadership to establish the systems, standards, and long-term vision for our Geotechnical Services Department. You'll have the opportunity to influence technical standards, mentor staff, strengthen client partnerships, and help grow a department that will become an integral part of our multidisciplinary environmental consulting and engineering firm.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Lead subsurface investigations including soil borings, test pits, and groundwater evaluations.

• Perform geotechnical analyses including bearing capacity, settlement, slope stability, retaining structures, pavement evaluations, and foundation recommendations.

• Prepare high-quality engineering reports, recommendations, and technical documentation.

• Coordinate drilling subcontractors, field technicians, and testing activities.

• Collaborate closely with environmental scientists, engineers, geologists, and permitting specialists to deliver integrated solutions.

• Ensure projects meet quality, safety, budget, and schedule expectations.

Department Growth & Leadership

• Help establish and grow company Geotechnical Services Department.

• Develop standard operating procedures, QA/QC standards, and technical best practices.

• Assist with equipment planning, staffing strategies, and department growth initiatives.

• Mentor junior engineers and field staff.

• Support business development, proposal preparation, and client presentations.

• Build lasting relationships with clients by serving as a trusted technical advisor.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field (Master's preferred).

• Environmental Consulting: 7 years (Required)

• North Carolina Professional Engineer (PE) license required.

• Engineer In Training (Preferred)

• Seven or more years of geotechnical engineering experience.

• Demonstrated experience managing projects and serving as a primary client contact.

• Strong knowledge of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and geotechnical investigations.

• Excellent communication and technical writing skills.

• Entrepreneurial mindset with an interest in helping build and grow a successful service line.

• Ability to work independently while thriving in a collaborative team environment.
