Job Title: Survey Crew ChiefJob DescriptionThe Survey Crew Chief assists a survey crew in performing field surveys for site work and construction layout. This role sets up and operates survey equipment, supports staking activities for various site improvements, and ensures accurate collection and recording of field data. Responsibilities- Assist the survey crew in performing field surveys for site work and construction layout.
- Set up and operate survey equipment, including total stations, GPS units, and data collectors.
- Support staking activities for foundations, utilities, grading, and other site improvements.
- Collect, record, and verify field data with a high degree of accuracy.
- Maintain survey equipment, ensuring proper handling, storage, and readiness for use.
- Drive to project sites and help mobilize and demobilize survey equipment and materials.
- Follow all safety procedures and site protocols to maintain a safe working environment.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure survey tasks are completed efficiently and on schedule.
- Communicate clearly with field and office staff regarding survey findings and project needs.
- Demonstrate reliability, consistency, and a strong desire to learn and grow in the surveying profession.
Essential Skills- Experience assisting with field surveys for site work and construction layout.
- Ability to set up and operate survey equipment such as total stations, GPS units, and data collectors.
- Basic knowledge of topography, surveying, and land surveying principles.
- 0–1 year of AutoCAD experience, with familiarity in Civil 3D preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a work truck to multiple job sites.
- Ability to travel regularly to various project locations and be comfortable in an all-travel role.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to collect and record field data accurately.
- Commitment to following safety procedures and site protocols.
- Dependable work habits, including reliability, consistency, and punctuality.
- Strong work ethic and willingness to perform physically active field work.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related civil discipline.
- Interest in developing skills in AutoCAD and Civil 3D for survey-related design and drafting.
- Desire to grow within a surveying and site development-focused firm.
- Strong soft skills, including effective communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
- Ability to adapt to changing site conditions and varying project requirements.

Work EnvironmentThis is a field-based role that operates primarily at various job sites in New Jersey. The typical schedule runs from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional Saturday work as needed. You will drive a work truck to and from project locations and spend most of your time outdoors on active construction and site work projects. The environment involves working with survey equipment such as total stations, GPS units, and data collectors, and collaborating closely with a survey crew. Overtime is not required but is offered weekly, and the firm provides structured raises at 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year to support professional growth. Dress is practical and appropriate for field work and construction sites, with adherence to all safety requirements and protective gear as needed.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Dover, NJ.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.
