Job Title: Distribution Designer
Job Description
The Distribution Designer creates detailed overhead and underground electric distribution designs for new construction, rebuilds, relocations, and system upgrades. This role develops complete design packages, performs technical calculations to ensure system reliability and safety, and manages materials and workflows while applying relevant codes, standards, and utility construction practices.
Responsibilities
- Create overhead and underground electric distribution designs for new construction, rebuilds, relocations, and system upgrades.
- Apply all applicable codes, standards, and utility construction practices to assigned work orders to ensure safe and compliant designs.
- Develop comprehensive design packages, including plan and profile drawings, staking sheets, material lists, and construction details.
- Perform distribution system calculations, such as equipment sizing, load calculations, and pole loading analysis.
- Utilize designated design tools and platforms, including the person and Katapult, to produce accurate and efficient distribution designs.
- Manage materials and workflows associated with design projects, ensuring timely completion and proper documentation.
- Use workflow management systems or software to track, organize, and progress work orders and design tasks.
- Field projects as needed, gathering site information and verifying conditions to support accurate design work.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and utility representatives to support power delivery and utility design objectives.
- Support ongoing system upgrades and improvements for a large investor-owned utility by delivering high-quality distribution engineering designs.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent; higher education is also acceptable.
- At least 3 years of experience in electric distribution design.
- Hands-on experience with overhead and underground power distribution design for utility systems.
- Proficiency in CAD tools such as AutoCAD and MicroStation for developing electrical and utility design drawings.
- Strong understanding of power distribution, power delivery, and utility design principles.
- Ability to perform electrical design tasks, including equipment sizing, load calculations, and pole loading analysis.
- Experience applying applicable codes, standards, and utility construction practices to distribution engineering work.
- Experience utilizing workflow management systems or software to manage design projects and work orders.
- Ability to field projects when needed to collect site data and verify existing conditions.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency in the person for design work, particularly important for remote work arrangements.
- Experience working with investor-owned utilities or similar utility clients.
- Background in distribution engineering and electrical design within utility or power delivery environments.
- Strong attention to detail in creating plan and profile drawings, staking sheets, material lists, and construction details.
- Ability to manage materials and workflows effectively across multiple concurrent projects.
- Comfort working with platforms such as Katapult or similar tools for design and project management.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with project teams and utility stakeholders.
- Ability to adapt to established engineering design processes in a growing firm that supports multiple utilities.
Work Environment
This position operates in a hybrid work environment, typically requiring three days per week in the office and two days working from home. Remote work may be available for individuals who demonstrate strong proficiency in the person. The role involves regular use of CAD software such as AutoCAD and MicroStation, as well as design and workflow tools like Katapult and other workflow management systems. Work is performed in a professional office setting with occasional field visits to project sites as needed to support accurate distribution design. The environment supports collaboration with engineering and utility teams and offers the opportunity to contribute to projects for a large investor-owned utility within an established and growing engineering design firm.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
