Job Description
The Quality Engineer II plays a key role in driving continuous improvement and ensuring robust quality processes within a plant-based engine assembly environment. This position coordinates quality objectives across departments, analyzes process data to identify trends and risks, and implements error-proofing solutions to enhance product and process reliability. The role requires a blend of hands-on involvement on the production floor and analytical work using advanced quality tools to support sustained quality performance.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate quality objectives with cross-functional departments to align goals and ensure consistent execution of quality standards.
- Drive continuous improvement by developing, implementing, and maintaining error-proofing and mistake-proofing solutions in the assembly process.
- Keep leadership informed of progress, developments, risks, and pending quality issues through clear and timely communication.
- Drive quality issues to closure by using structured feedback loops, root cause analysis, and corrective action processes.
- Analyze assembly process data to identify trends, emerging concerns, and opportunities for process optimization.
- Use advanced quality tools, including PFMEAs, to ensure robust and capable assembly processes and to mitigate potential failure modes.
- Analyze Statistical Process Control (SPC) data and collaborate with manufacturing engineering to implement process improvements.
- Apply knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) operations to support dimensional accuracy and compliance.
- Facilitate and support others in the execution of quality improvement activities, including problem-solving, audits, and corrective actions.
- Work hands-on in a plant environment with engine assembly operations to monitor processes, validate improvements, and resolve issues at the source.
- Provide guidance and support to new team members on quality practices, tools, and procedures.
- Lead projects or specific quality processes as required, ensuring deliverables meet scope, schedule, and quality expectations.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree and 2–4 years of relevant experience in quality engineering or a closely related field.
- Working knowledge and expanded professional experience in quality engineering within a manufacturing or assembly environment.
- Strong understanding of key business drivers and how quality performance impacts operational and organizational goals.
- Ability to work independently within established guidelines and policies to solve problems of moderate complexity.
- Experience coordinating quality objectives and initiatives across multiple departments.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement error-proofing and mistake-proofing solutions.
- Proficiency in analyzing assembly process data to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
- Hands-on experience with advanced quality tools such as PFMEA for process risk assessment and control.
- Experience analyzing SPC data and collaborating with manufacturing engineering to drive process improvements.
- Knowledge of GD&T principles and practical experience with CMM operations.
- Ability to facilitate and support quality improvement activities involving cross-functional teams.
- Strong communication skills to keep management informed of progress, issues, and corrective actions.
- Capability to provide guidance to new team members on quality tools, processes, and expectations.
- Ability to lead quality-related projects or processes as needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Product knowledge of transmissions, axles, and engines.
- Experience with SPC, MSA, and PFMEA methodologies beyond basic exposure.
- Prior experience working in a manufacturing environment, particularly in automotive or engine assembly.
- Knowledge of quality engineering activities such as PPAP, audits, and related documentation.
- Experience performing or supporting quality audits and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
- Familiarity with CMM programming or advanced measurement techniques.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a structured approach to root cause analysis.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, production, and other functional teams.
