Job Title: Test Engineer
Job Description
The Test Engineer manages and drives the execution of Technology Services projects focused on testing and product certifications. This role primarily centers on planning, conducting, and documenting tests for new products and changes to existing products, with additional opportunities to support product certification projects. The Test Engineer ensures that products meet internal requirements, industry standards, and regulatory expectations through rigorous research, verification, validation, and certification testing.
Responsibilities
- Drive new product introductions and existing product changes through the testing and certification process from planning to completion.
- Perform hands-on testing on products and components, including setting up tests, operating test equipment, and preparing samples for research, verification, validation, and product certification activities.
- Define and coordinate testing performed by lab technicians and external laboratories, including specifying test methods, equipment, and sample preparation requirements.
- Support the documentation of lab projects by maintaining accurate records of test plans, procedures, data, and results.
- Compose and interpret technical reports, test reports, business correspondence, and procedural documents to clearly communicate findings and recommendations.
- Interpret and analyze applicable standards, including governmental standards and regulations, to ensure tests and products comply with relevant requirements.
- Lead projects of varying complexity and financial impact, managing timelines, resources, and deliverables related to testing and certification.
- Conduct day-to-day testing on load frames, vertical and tension machines, and horizontal load systems, ensuring accurate setup, execution, and data collection.
- Run tests, make detailed observations, and document results in formal test reports with clear conclusions and supporting data.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external certification or regulatory agencies as needed to support product certification efforts.
- Apply mechanical and electrical engineering principles to evaluate test results and support product improvements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of testing processes, methods, and documentation in alignment with quality systems and standards.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, BSMET, or a related field, or equivalent experience (ideally 5+ years) in a similar role and industry.
- At least 2 years of experience with data acquisition systems, measurement sensors, and control devices used in metal and/or mechanical testing.
- Proficiency with test equipment, measuring tools, and mechanical testing techniques.
- Ability to compose and interpret technical reports, business correspondence, and procedures with clarity and accuracy.
- Ability to interpret and analyze standards and governmental regulations relevant to product testing and certification.
- Strong project leadership skills with the ability to lead projects of varying complexity and financial impact.
- Ability to stand for long durations while setting up and running tests.
- Ability to lift, push, or pull loads up to 75 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to distinguish colors to make accurate visual observations during testing.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills to evaluate test data and identify issues or trends.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience using SolidWorks for design interpretation or test fixture development.
- Experience with ERP systems and PLM/PDM (Product Lifecycle Management/Product Data Management) tools.
- Familiarity with computer programming to support automation, data acquisition, or analysis.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality systems and auditing processes.
- Experience working with external certification or regulatory agencies such as UL, CSA, or FM.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply industry standards and governmental regulations to testing and certification activities.
- Interest in ongoing professional development, including participation in training and certification programs such as process improvement or quality certifications.
Work Environment
The Test Engineer works primarily in a laboratory environment that is air conditioned and located off the manufacturing floor.
