Job Title: Phlebotomist IIJob DescriptionThe Phlebotomist II plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate processing and documentation, troubleshooting issues, training others, and recommending improvements to workflow. This position focuses on delivering safe, efficient, and courteous specimen collection services for patients of all ages in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Responsibilities- Perform venipunctures and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and care.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Label specimens correctly, centrifuge and split samples, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Package specimens securely for transport and follow all protocols necessary to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Follow detailed procedures outlined by specific protocols to ensure proper handling and transport of specimens.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory tests and specimen requirements.
- Update and maintain accurate patient information and related documentation in laboratory systems.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support laboratory safety and equipment reliability.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and regulatory guidelines.
- Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries when appropriate.
- Provide courteous, patient-focused customer service during all interactions, ensuring a positive experience for patients and clinical staff.
- Support training of colleagues by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and sharing best practices as needed.
Essential Skills- Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, with a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience.
- Proficiency in using straight needles and butterfly needles for blood collection.
- Strong phlebotomy skills, including specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, and processing.
- Ability to collect specimens from patients across all age groups, including pediatric blood drawing skills.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states.
- Ability to accurately match laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verify test orders.
- Knowledge of specimen handling requirements, including storage temperatures, appropriate containers, and transport protocols.
- Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to following safety and regulatory standards.
- Competence in updating and managing patient information and laboratory data.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- High School Diploma or GED.
