Job Description
The Bilingual Phlebotomist provides expert blood collection and specimen preparation services while ensuring patients across diverse age groups and backgrounds feel comfortable and experience minimal discomfort. This role supports high-quality patient care by performing accurate venipuncture, specimen handling, and administrative tasks in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of skill and care.
- Collect and store blood and other specimens, including urine and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes clearly and courteously to patients to help put them at ease.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring accurate labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing of specimens as required by test orders.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing specimens.
- Package specimens properly for transport, following all protocol requirements to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures, place samples in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, and follow specific procedures for transport as outlined by protocol.
- Record maintenance data, perform decontamination procedures, and update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or records.
- Fully understand physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements.
- Wear appropriate attire and required protective equipment in accordance with safety and laboratory guidelines.
- Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy inquiries, following applicable guidelines.
- Demonstrate strong administrative skills and attention to detail in all aspects of specimen handling and documentation.
Essential Skills
- 2–3 years of experience drawing blood in a clinical or laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture with straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Experience with pediatric blood draws and the ability to work effectively with children.
- Strong administrative skills and exceptional attention to detail in labeling, documentation, and data entry.
- Ability to process specimens, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging for transport.
- Understanding of physicians’ laboratory orders and related testing requirements.
- Ability to clearly explain procedures to patients and communicate in a courteous and professional manner.
- Bilingual communication skills, including the ability to speak Spanish, to support diverse patient populations.
- Ability to answer telephone inquiries and communicate laboratory results accurately and professionally.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working with a wide demographic of patients, including pediatric and adult populations.
- Comfort with in-state travel and working in different clinical locations.
- Ability to maintain specimen integrity through proper storage, temperature control, and adherence to transport protocols.
- Capability to read and interpret laboratory requisitions and computer-generated labels accurately.
- Commitment to ongoing training and professional development through annual department sessions.
Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical setting that involves direct patient contact and hands-on specimen collection and processing. Two schedule options are available in Yonkers: one opening offers Monday–Friday hours from 12:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with every other Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and another opening offers Monday–Friday hours from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The position is well-suited for individuals who enjoy a change of scenery and in-state travel between locations.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
