Job Title: Phlebotomist I - Broken ArrowJob DescriptionThe Phlebotomist I plays a key role in performing high-quality venipunctures and specimen collections while supporting smooth laboratory workflow in a fast-paced environment. This position focuses on accurate blood draws, specimen handling, and data entry, while delivering excellent customer service to patients and collaborating closely with clinical staff.
Responsibilities- Perform venipuncture and specimen collection on patients of all ages using straight needles and butterfly needles, following established procedures.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens as required.
- Collect, label, and store specimens according to established protocols to ensure accuracy and specimen integrity.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders and transport protocols.
- Package specimens for transport and store samples at appropriate temperatures and in proper collection containers or tubes.
- Update and maintain patient information and input laboratory orders accurately into the appropriate systems.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures in accordance with laboratory standards.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings and remain current on laboratory policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results when appropriate to satisfy inquiries.
- Provide excellent customer service to patients, clinicians, and staff, ensuring a positive and respectful experience.
- Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and specimen processing.
- Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques and support training activities as needed.
Essential Skills- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months to 1 year of recent work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy, blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection.
- Ability to perform venipuncture and specimen collection on patients of all ages.
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to deliver a courteous and professional patient experience.
- Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures and respond to inquiries.
- Ability to input and process laboratory orders accurately and update patient information.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure proper specimen handling, labeling, and matching requisitions to specimen tubes.
- Dependability with excellent attendance and reliability.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience recording maintenance data and performing decontamination procedures in a laboratory or clinical setting.
- Familiarity with packaging specimens for transport and maintaining specimen integrity through proper storage conditions.
- Understanding of physicians’ orders and laboratory test requirements.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to maintaining safety and compliance.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain a clean and orderly work area.
