Job Title: Health and Safety SpecialistJob DescriptionThe Health and Safety Specialist works in partnership with the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) leadership team to inspect and evaluate equipment, processes, and working areas across a large campus to ensure compliance with government safety regulations and industry standards. This role develops and implements safety programs, recommends improvements to protect workers, and educates employees on preventing health issues through safety training and written programs. The specialist plays a key role in strengthening the overall safety culture within a manufacturing environment and supports continuous improvement of health and safety performance.
Responsibilities- Inspect and evaluate equipment, processes, and working areas across a large campus to ensure compliance with applicable government safety regulations and industry standards.
- Investigate accidents and incidents to identify root causes and develop corrective and preventive measures to avoid recurrence.
- Perform Job Hazard Analyses to identify risks and implement appropriate controls for various tasks and operations.
- Implement and maintain safety programs including, but not limited to, lockout/tagout, crane safety, respirator use, confined space entry, forklift safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other relevant programs.
- Conduct regular facility safety audits to detect existing or potential incident and health hazards, determine corrective or preventive measures, and follow up to ensure timely implementation.
- Assist in developing and achieving annual departmental health and safety goals.
- Plan, develop, and implement training programs for supervisors and employees to ensure compliance with safety standards and to enhance the overall safety culture.
- Prepare clear and engaging PowerPoint presentations and other training materials to support safety education initiatives.
- Support new employee safety orientation by delivering training and ensuring understanding of safety policies, procedures, and expectations.
- Provide ongoing safety training and coaching to employees at all levels to reinforce safe work practices.
- Interface with facility colleagues and provide safety leadership, guidance, and support to promote a proactive safety culture.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams within the manufacturing environment to address safety concerns and implement best practices.
- Assist with safety reporting, documentation, and recordkeeping to support regulatory compliance and internal audits.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to environmental health and safety performance.
Essential Skills- Degree and/or OSHA certification in a relevant field.
- Minimum of 5 years or more of relevant experience in health and safety, preferably within a manufacturing or similar industrial environment.
- Specific knowledge of health and safety regulations, including state requirements and federal requirements such as OSHA standards.
- Demonstrated experience with environmental health and safety (EHS) programs, including safety audits and safety training.
- Proficiency in implementing safety procedures such as lockout/tagout, crane safety, respirator programs, confined space entry, forklift safety, and PPE programs.
- Experience conducting Job Hazard Analyses and developing corrective and preventive actions.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and engage employees at all levels.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for documentation, reporting, and training material development.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate closely with colleagues.
- Familiarity with OSHA safety requirements and environmental safety practices.
- Experience with safety reporting, audits, and documentation related to environmental health and safety.
- Ability to regularly walk a large campus and perform field-based safety inspections and audits.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Chemical knowledge is a plus, particularly in relation to hazardous materials and hazardous waste handling.
- Experience in a manufacturing facility or industrial setting is highly desirable.
- Background in environmental safety, including understanding of hazardous waste and environmental compliance, is beneficial.
