Job Title: Material Handler – Crate AssemblyJob DescriptionThis role focuses on accurately handling, tracking, and organizing material inventory in a high-volume warehouse and production environment. You will receive, move, and stage materials, support crate building and assembly, and ensure that all inventory data is recorded correctly in the inventory management system. Working directly on the warehouse floor around heavy machinery, you will help keep production running smoothly by coordinating material flow from stock to processing and maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and efficiency.
Responsibilities- Complete material receiving activities for shipments between locations and for materials received directly from the mill.
- Coordinate the movement of material from stock to processing areas to support production requirements and schedules.
- Operate material handling equipment, such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and other warehouse vehicles, to move material safely and efficiently.
- Perform accurate and timely data entry in the inventory management system to record all material movements and transactions.
- Prepare, label, and maintain appropriate inventory identification tags to ensure materials are clearly and correctly identified.
- Complete material consolidation tasks, including organizing and maintaining supermarket or staging areas for production.
- Monitor inventory levels, identify material shortages or issues, and communicate them promptly to the appropriate staff.
- Perform verification of scrap, ensuring that scrap materials are correctly identified, documented, and processed.
- Assist the quality assurance team with activities related to credits and material quality issues as needed.
- Maintain a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail in all written work, measurements, and data entry.
- Perform equipment preventative maintenance and basic clean-up tasks to keep work areas and machinery in good working order.
- Participate in, support, and comply with all health, safety, quality, and Lean initiatives and requirements.
- Assemble crates and related packaging using hand tools and nail guns to prepare materials for shipping or storage.
- Support general warehouse duties, including order picking, loading, shipping and receiving, and general labor tasks.
- Work safely on and around heavy machinery and production equipment on the warehouse floor.
- Meet established production numbers and efficiency expectations while maintaining safety and quality standards.
Essential Skills- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Ability to read and write English and perform basic math problems.
- Basic computer skills for data entry into an inventory management system.
- Ability to use a tape measure and calipers for material inspection and measurement.
- Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy in written work and data entry.
- Ability to stand, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 40 lbs with or without accommodation.
- Certification to operate material handling equipment, such as a forklift, side-loader, 4-directional lift, or cherry-picker.
- At least 1+ years of warehouse and production experience in a metals facility or manufacturing-related facility.
- Experience with material handling, inventory control, and warehouse production processes.
- Ability to safely operate pallet jacks and perform order picking, loading, and general warehouse tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Some college coursework, especially if leading toward completion of a degree.
- Approximately 3 years of material control or inventory experience.
- Previous experience safely operating a variety of material handling equipment, including forklifts and side-loaders.
- Experience in construction, crate building, or crate assembly.
- Background working with wood, trusses, or similar structural assembly work.
- Experience using hand tools and nail guns in a production or warehouse environment.
- Experience in shipping and receiving operations within a warehouse or production facility.
- Familiarity with Lean principles and working in environments with high production and efficiency expectations.
