Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Non-Equity Partner to join our Professional Liability practice and lead defense efforts in complex civil litigation matters. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in professional liability defense, proven trial experience, and the ability to manage a robust caseload while building client relationships and mentoring associates. This role focuses on delivering excellent client service, advancing case strategy from investigation through trial, and contributing to the growth of the practice across New Jersey and New York jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead defense of professional liability matters (lawyers, accountants, architects, and other professionals) from intake through trial, including case strategy, motion practice, discovery, and evidentiary hearings.
- Manage and try complex civil litigation matters; prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, and trial materials; present cases in court and at mediations/arbitrations.
- Provide high-quality legal counseling to clients on risk management, exposure assessment, and litigation strategy specific to professional liability claims.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop associates and paralegals; delegate tasks, review work product, and provide constructive feedback to ensure high-quality representation.
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships through regular communication, case updates, and proactive solutions to minimize client risk and litigation costs.
- Drive business development efforts for the practice: identify opportunities, participate in client pitches, attend industry events, and contribute to marketing and thought leadership initiatives.
- Manage case budgets, billing, and staffing to achieve efficient, profitable handling of matters while maintaining excellent client service.
- Collaborate with other practice groups and offices to coordinate defenses involving related liability areas and to leverage firm resources.
- Ensure compliance with ethical and professional standards; maintain current knowledge of applicable law, rules, and best practices in professional liability defense.
- Participate in recruiting, performance evaluations, and practice management initiatives to support growth and operational excellence.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to the New Jersey Bar & NY Bar
- Minimum of 8+ years of civil litigation experience with a substantial focus on professional liability and defense work.
- Demonstrated trial experience with a track record of handling complex cases through jury trials, bench trials, or significant evidentiary hearings.
- Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills, with the ability to craft persuasive motions, briefs, and trial presentations.
- Proven client-management and business development capabilities, including experience cultivating and expanding client relationships.
- Experience supervising and mentoring junior attorneys and support staff, with excellent leadership and team-building abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple matters, work effectively under deadlines, and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
- Membership in good standing with applicable Bars and a commitment to maintaining professional and ethical standards.
- Familiarity with defense strategies in professional liability, civil litigation procedures, trial practice, and relevant local and state rules in NJ and NY.
