Job Title: Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
Job Description
This role focuses on inspecting welding operations, materials, and completed welds to ensure strict compliance with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and quality requirements. The Certified Welding Inspector works closely with production teams, project managers, engineering, and customers to promote quality, safety, and continuous improvement across shop, field, and construction environments.
Responsibilities
- Perform detailed visual inspections of welds and fabricated components to verify quality and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Verify adherence to approved welding procedures, drawings, and specifications throughout welding operations.
- Read and interpret welding symbols, blueprints, construction drawings, and engineering documents to guide inspection activities.
- Monitor welding activities in the shop and field to ensure proper techniques, materials, and procedures are followed.
- Document inspection results clearly and accurately, and prepare detailed inspection reports for internal and client use.
- Identify, document, and communicate non-conformances, and follow up to ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
- Coordinate and witness non-destructive testing (NDT) activities as required, and review results for accuracy and completeness.
- Maintain accurate inspection records, quality documentation, and construction materials testing data in accordance with company procedures.
- Perform testing, observation, and inspection in accordance with training and specified procedures, ensuring quality standards are consistently met.
- Conduct basic analysis of inspection and test data to verify accuracy before communicating findings to project leadership.
- Draft inspection reports for review by lead inspectors and project managers, incorporating all relevant technical details.
- Communicate inspection findings, issues, and progress updates to project managers and other personnel as directed.
- Assist lead inspectors on complex projects and support overall project quality control efforts.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to resolve welding-related issues and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Train and mentor junior welders and inspectors as needed, promoting best practices in welding inspection and safety.
- Ensure compliance with company safety policies, industry safety standards, and project-specific safety requirements at all times.
- Perform pre-task planning prior to executing work, and promptly report any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Maintain responsibility for upholding quality standards on all assigned projects, including construction welding and inspection activities.
- Travel to job sites or client facilities as needed to perform inspections, testing, and quality assurance activities.
- Work effectively in both field and shop environments, adapting to varying site conditions and project requirements.
Essential Skills
- Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in welding, inspection, or a related field preferred.
- Strong knowledge of welding processes, metallurgy, fabrication, and inspection techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, welding symbols, codes, and specifications.
- Demonstrated experience in welding inspection or construction inspection, including construction materials testing and quality inspection.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and inspection reporting systems for documentation and data analysis.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to provide clear, accurate documentation of findings and results.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to interact effectively with project managers, engineers, and field personnel.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving history to support travel to various job sites.
- Ability to work in shop, field, and construction environments, including standing, walking, bending, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform visual inspections in varying environmental conditions, with required close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with structural steel, pressure vessels, piping, or industrial fabrication projects.
- Familiarity with AWS, API, AISC, or related industry codes and standards.
