Job Summary We are seeking an experienced Pharmacy Technician III – Prior Authorization to support outpatient pharmacy services by managing prescription prior authorization requests. Working under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, this role is responsible for independently handling prior authorization workflows, ensuring timely submissions, follow-ups, and documentation while collaborating closely with pharmacy and clinical teams to support high-quality patient care and medication access. Key Responsibilities Prior Authorization Processing Review and process prescription prior authorization requests for outpatient medications. Identify appropriate Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) prior authorization forms and complete submissions accurately. Extract and verify patient demographics, prescription details, provider information, and supporting clinical documentation from the Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Submit prior authorization requests within established turnaround times and departmental productivity standards. Monitor pending requests and perform timely follow-up activities to ensure efficient processing. Documentation & Communication Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of all prior authorization activities within the EMR and internal tracking systems. Communicate authorization approvals, denials, and status updates to pharmacists, providers, and pharmacy staff. Ensure all records are complete, accurate, and compliant with organizational and regulatory requirements. Provide exceptional customer service while interacting with patients, providers, insurance representatives, and internal stakeholders. Collaboration & Operational Support Collaborate with pharmacists, providers, and outpatient pharmacy teams to ensure efficient authorization processing. Utilize medication knowledge, ICD-10 diagnosis codes, and disease-specific resources to support successful prior authorization submissions. Assist in resolving authorization-related issues and medication access barriers. Support departmental goals through quality-focused and patient-centered service. Technology & Compliance Utilize EMR systems, pharmacy software, and internal tracking tools effectively. Maintain proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and technology platforms required for onsite and remote work. Adhere to pharmacy policies, procedures, quality standards, and confidentiality requirements. Demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and commitment to continuous improvement. Required Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Minimum 3 years of high-volume retail pharmacy technician experience. Minimum 1 year of prior authorization experience. Active Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential, or ability to obtain certification by the required deadline. Experience working with Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Strong knowledge of: Pharmacy operations Prescription processing Insurance plans and coverage Prior authorization procedures Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills. Ability to work independently in both onsite and remote work environments. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. Familiarity with ICD-10 coding and specialty medication prior authorization workflows. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and remote workflow tools. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and customer service skills. Experience working within complex healthcare systems or specialty pharmacy environments. Certifications Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification required (or ability to obtain within required timeframe). Additional pharmacy-related certifications are a plus.
