About the Position
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments to provide specialized instruction and support for students with visual disabilities in a school-based setting. The ideal candidate will collaborate with educators, families, and multidisciplinary teams to develop individualized learning strategies that support academic achievement, accessibility, independence, and overall student success.
Job Duties
- Develop and implement individualized instruction plans based on student needs and Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals
- Provide specialized instruction to students with visual impairments, including braille, assistive technology, and compensatory skills as appropriate
- Assess students’ functional vision needs and provide recommendations to support educational access
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, related service providers, and families
- Support development of skills related to orientation and mobility, independent learning, and self-advocacy
- Adapt instructional materials and classroom resources to ensure accessibility for students
- Provide consultation and support regarding accommodations, modifications, and assistive technology
- Participate in IEP meetings, evaluations, and multidisciplinary team discussions
- Maintain accurate documentation of student progress, services provided, and educational outcomes
- Ensure compliance with district, state, and federal special education requirements
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field from an accredited institution
- Valid North Carolina teaching license issued through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI)
- Appropriate Exceptional Children (EC) licensure/endorsement area for Visual Impairments
- Knowledge and experience supporting students who are blind or visually impaired
- Knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, and special education compliance requirements
- Experience with braille instruction, assistive technology, and accessible instructional strategies preferred
- Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills
- Ability to work effectively with students, families, educators, and multidisciplinary teams
- Successful completion of required background screening and district onboarding requirements
