Job Description
The Building Construction Superintendent oversees commercial construction projects from initial groundbreaking through final completion. This role manages daily on-site operations, coordinates subcontractors and vendors, drives project schedules, and ensures strict adherence to safety, quality, and budget requirements. The Superintendent serves as the on-site leader, working closely with project managers, owners, architects, and engineers to deliver high-quality commercial projects on time and within budget.
Responsibilities
- Manage all field operations for commercial construction projects from start to finish.
- Coordinate and supervise subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel to ensure efficient and effective site activities.
- Develop, update, and maintain detailed project schedules and ensure all milestones are completed on time.
- Conduct daily site inspections to monitor progress, quality, and safety conditions.
- Lead and document regular safety meetings and enforce OSHA and company safety standards at all times.
- Monitor quality control and verify that all work complies with plans, specifications, and client expectations.
- Coordinate required inspections with authorities and stakeholders and maintain accurate project documentation.
- Collaborate closely with project managers, owners, architects, and engineers to align field operations with project goals.
- Identify and resolve field issues proactively to minimize delays and disruptions.
- Manage site logistics, including material deliveries, storage, equipment utilization, and overall site organization.
- Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contracts to guide field execution.
- Communicate clearly with clients and stakeholders regarding project status, issues, and resolutions.
- Support budgeting and cost control efforts by monitoring labor, materials, and equipment usage on site.
- Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, and accountability among all field personnel.
Essential Skills
- 10+ years of commercial construction experience.
- At least 5 years of experience in a Superintendent role on commercial projects.
- Proven experience managing ground-up commercial, industrial, educational, healthcare, or municipal construction projects.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, project scheduling, budgeting, and site logistics.
- Thorough understanding of OSHA regulations, safety compliance, and jobsite safety requirements.
- Ability to coordinate multiple subcontractors, vendors, and trade partners effectively.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contracts accurately.
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to direct and motivate field teams.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with clients, stakeholders, and project teams.
- Effective problem-solving skills with the ability to address and resolve field issues quickly.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to lead teams and communicate effectively with clients and stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with Procore and other construction management software preferred.
- Experience using Bluebeam for drawing review and markup.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Project for scheduling and project planning.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications for documentation, reporting, and communication.
- Prior Superintendent experience on a variety of commercial project types.
- Strong understanding of quality control practices and standards in commercial construction.
