Sunset Industries has been manufacturing and assembling high-precision components for more than 66 years across the Aerospace, Nuclear, and Industrial markets. We have a strong reputation for quality and customer service. The 26,000 sqft facility and production area are very clean and air conditioned located in Mentor, OH.
As an intermediate to experienced level Quality Inspector, you will be a key member of our Quality team, performing first piece, in-process, and final inspection of precision aerospace components and producing the documentation that ships with every order. Reporting to the Quality Manager, you will work side by side with machinists, programmers, and production leadership to catch issues early and keep quality moving. The candidate must be a team player with an attitude of helpfulness that supports the operation. The successful candidate will need to be reliable, organized, analytical, and detail-driven with a willingness to collaborate amongst the team.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect and document precision machined components to customer print and AS9100D quality system requirements.
- Interpret technical prints and understand the requirements (GD&T knowledge required).
- Perform first piece inspection following initial setup and communicate results to the machinist and floor management before production runs.
- Perform final inspection after all machining and outside processing, recording each print characteristic on the Inspection History Card.
- Inspect incoming material and outside service operations (heat treat, plating, grinding, NDT) and review supplier certifications for conformance.
- Set up and verify gages used for production, including dial bore gages, and confirm calibration status before use.
- Apply sampling inspection plans and AQL levels per work instruction, or customer-specified plans when provided.
- Assist with AS9102 First Article Inspection Reports (FAIR), Certificates of Conformance, and inspection record submission through Net-Inspect.
- Identify, tag, and document non-conformances; support root cause and corrective action activity alongside the production team.
- Collaborate with machinists, programmers, and engineering to resolve quality issues at the source and reduce repeat defects.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of the inspection process, including the ongoing shift of inspection records to digital platforms.
- Maintain a clean, organized inspection area and adhere to FOD prevention and safety procedures.
Qualifications
- Quality control / quality assurance inspection experience in a machining or precision manufacturing environment: 2 years minimum
- Ability to read blueprints and interpret GD&T tolerances
- Proficiency with inspection instrumentation (micrometers, calipers, height stands, bore gages, thread and plug gages, optical comparators)
- High school diploma required; associate or bachelor’s degree welcomed
- Working computer skills, especially Excel and familiarity with software platforms
- Self-starter mentality - the ability to work in a timely manner with limited supervision
- Strong work ethic and reliability
- Attention to detail and a bias toward flagging issues early
- Good communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Integrity and trustworthiness with confidential and customer-proprietary information
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift materials as needed
- This position involves access to technical data controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). ITAR permits such access by U.S. Persons (U.S. citizens and nationals, lawful permanent residents, and protected individuals including refugees and asylees); for other applicants, access may require export authorization from the U.S. government. All applicants are considered without regard to citizenship or immigration status.
- ASQ Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) or Certified Quality Technician (CQT) preferred
- Familiarity with AS9100 / AS9102 requirements and aerospace quality documentation preferred
- Experience with automated inspection systems preferred, but not required (i.e. Keyence Vision System, Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), etc.)
