HCAI Healthcare Superintendent – Job Description (California)
Summary:
Experienced construction superintendent specializing in California healthcare projects under the jurisdiction of the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), now known as HCAI. Responsible for managing field operations, ensuring strict regulatory compliance, and delivering complex hospital and medical facility construction projects safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all on-site construction activities for HCAI/OSHPD-regulated healthcare projects, including hospitals, clinics, and medical office buildings
- Ensure full compliance with California Building Code (CBC), OSHPD/HCAI requirements, and all applicable safety and seismic standards
- Coordinate inspections with HCAI inspectors, ensuring documentation, approvals, and sign-offs are properly completed
- Manage and supervise subcontractors, field staff, and trades to maintain productivity and quality standards
- Interpret and enforce construction drawings, specifications, and approved plans, including deferred submittals
- Maintain strict adherence to Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) protocols in active healthcare environments
- Develop and manage project schedules, including short-interval planning and lookahead schedules
- Conduct daily site meetings, safety briefings, and coordination meetings with project stakeholders
- Enforce site safety in compliance with Cal/OSHA and company safety programs
- Identify and resolve field issues, RFIs, and constructability challenges in coordination with project managers and design teams
- Track and document project progress, including daily reports, inspections, and change orders
- Ensure proper installation and inspection of critical systems such as structural, mechanical, electrical, and medical gas systems
- Coordinate shutdowns, tie-ins, and phasing plans in occupied healthcare facilities
Skills & Qualifications
- Extensive experience with HCAI/OSHPD construction projects in California
- Strong knowledge of healthcare construction standards, including seismic compliance
- Ability to manage complex phasing in occupied hospital environments
- Proficient in construction management software (Procore, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, etc.)
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
- OSHA 30 certification (minimum); additional healthcare safety training preferred
Certifications (Preferred)
- HCAI/OSHPD Field Experience
- OSHA 30 or 10
- First Aid/CPR
- ICRA Certification
- LEED Accreditation (optional)
