Lead Structured Cabling Technician
Position Overview
Bates Data Com is seeking an experienced, motivated, and detail-oriented Lead Structured Cabling Technician to join our growing team specializing in structured cabling, network infrastructure, fiber optics, and low-voltage systems.
The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience installing, testing, troubleshooting, and leading crews in commercial and industrial environments.
As a Lead Technician, you will be responsible for overseeing a team of 2 to 3 technicians, mentoring, ensuring quality workmanship, coordinating with project managers, and serving as the primary on-site lead for structured cabling and network infrastructure projects.
This role involves traveling to job sites nationwide and leading projects that include structured cabling systems, fiber optic installations, wireless access points, cameras, network infrastructure, and low-voltage systems.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Crew Management
- Lead and supervise a structured cabling crew of 2 to 3
- Coordinate daily job site activities and assign tasks to technicians
- Ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and according to customer specifications
- Mentor and train junior technicians on installation standards and best practices
- Conduct quality control inspections and verify workmanship meets company standards
- Communicate project progress, challenges, and resource needs to Project Managers
- Serve as the primary point of contact on-site for customers and other trades
Structured Cabling Installation
- Install, route, label, terminate, and certify Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, and fiber optic cabling systems
- Oversee cable pulling operations through walls, ceilings, conduits, cable trays, and support structures
- Install telecommunications racks, cabinets, ladder racks, patch panels, cable management systems, and support hardware
- Perform organized cable dressing and rack buildouts in IDFs, MDFs, and telecommunications rooms
- Ensure all installations comply with ANSI/TIA, BICSI, and customer specifications
Testing & Troubleshooting
- Test and certify copper and fiber cabling using Fluke and fiber testing equipment
- Troubleshoot structured cabling, fiber optic, and network infrastructure issues
- Diagnose and resolve connectivity, signal loss, and installation defects
- Review and validate test results prior to project turnover
Network & Device Installation
- Lead installation and deployment of Wireless Access Points and Camera Systems
- Assist with installation and mounting of network switches and related infrastructure
- Coordinate with customer IT teams to ensure successful system integration and activation
Project Execution & Documentation
- Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, construction drawings, and technical specifications
- Review project scope and ensure installations align with customer requirements
- Track project progress and maintain accurate installation documentation
- Complete punch lists and closeout documentation
- Coordinate material usage and inventory management on job sites
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce OSHA safety standards and company safety policies
- Ensure crew members utilize proper PPE and safe work practices
- Safely operate scissor lifts, boom lifts, ladders, and power tools
- Maintain clean, organized, and professional job sites
- Participate in job hazard assessments and safety meetings
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in structured cabling, fiber optics, or low-voltage installation
- 2+ years of experience leading crews or serving in a lead technician role
- Extensive experience with copper and fiber optic cabling systems
- Strong understanding of telecommunications infrastructure, IDFs, MDFs, and data center environments
- Experience interpreting blueprints, floor plans, and technical drawings
- Experience with cable testing and certification equipment
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Must pass back ground check
