Position Summary
JGR Development Group is seeking an experienced Underground Utility Pipe Layer to join our growing utility construction team. This position is responsible for the installation of water mains, sanitary sewer systems, storm drainage systems, utility services, manholes, hydrants, valves, and related underground infrastructure on commercial, municipal, and residential projects.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of utility construction, grades, elevations, trench safety, and pipe installation practices. This individual must be able to work efficiently within a crew environment while maintaining high-quality workmanship and safety standards.
Responsibilities
- Install sanitary sewer, water, and storm drainage pipe systems.
- Set and install manholes, catch basins, valves, hydrants, cleanouts, and related utility structures.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, profiles, cut sheets, and utility plans.
- Establish and maintain proper line and grade using lasers and grade rods.
- Assist with trench excavation, bedding, backfill, and compaction operations.
- Safely enter and work within trenches in accordance with OSHA regulations.
- Direct excavator operators during pipe installation activities.
- Perform utility tie-ins, service installations, and utility crossings.
- Verify pipe alignment, elevations, and slopes before installation.
- Install restrained joint systems, fittings, and appurtenances.
- Assist with pressure testing, chlorination, and utility inspections.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Work alongside foremen, operators, and laborers to meet production goals.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of underground utility pipe laying experience.
- Experience installing:
- Water mains (PVC, C900, DIP)
- Sanitary sewer mains and services
- Storm drainage systems (RCP, HDPE, PVC)
- Ability to read utility plans and understand elevations and grades.
- Knowledge of trench safety and OSHA excavation requirements.
- Ability to use pipe lasers and grade equipment.
- Experience setting manholes, valves, hydrants, and utility structures.
- Valid driver's license required.
- CDL preferred but not required.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Must be dependable, punctual, and safety-focused.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 75+ pounds.
- Ability to work in trenches, uneven terrain, and confined work areas.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform physically demanding tasks throughout the workday.
Preferred Experience
Candidates with experience in the installation of sanitary sewer, water distribution, and storm drainage systems commonly found on municipal and commercial utility projects will be given preference. Experience with manhole construction, utility tie-ins, road crossings, and DOT or municipal utility work is highly desirable.
