Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including obtaining medical histories and conducting physical examinations.
- Evaluate patients prior to surgery and ensure they are medically optimized for scheduled procedures.
- Order, interpret, and review laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, and other diagnostic studies.
- Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with supervising surgeons.
- Assist surgeons during operative procedures, including first assisting, tissue handling, wound closure, suturing, and maintaining a sterile surgical field.
- Perform bedside procedures within the scope of practice, including wound care, drain removal, suture removal, casting, splinting, injections, and aspiration procedures as appropriate.
- Provide post-operative management, monitor patient recovery, and identify complications requiring intervention.
- Educate patients and families regarding surgical procedures, treatment plans, post-operative care, medications, and recovery expectations.
- Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with state regulations and collaborative practice agreements.
- Document patient encounters, operative notes, and treatment plans accurately and timely within the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Coordinate care with physicians, nursing staff, rehabilitation services, and other interdisciplinary team members.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain compliance with accreditation, infection control, and patient safety standards.
- Respond promptly to patient concerns and clinical emergencies within the surgical center.
Qualifications
- Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Current Physician Assistant license in the applicable state.
- NCCPA Certification required.
- DEA registration and state controlled substance license (or eligibility to obtain).
- BLS and ACLS certifications required.
- Minimum of 1-2 years of surgical experience preferred; new graduates with extensive surgical rotations may be considered.
- Experience in orthopedic, general, neurosurgery, vascular, plastic, ENT, urology, or other surgical specialties is a plus.
