Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Area Manager to oversee the safe, compliant and efficient operation of water and wastewater assets across a defined geographic area. The Area Manager will lead regional teams responsible for treatment plants, sewer and storm networks, pipelines and related construction and maintenance activities, ensuring regulatory compliance, asset reliability and excellent customer service while meeting budget and performance targets.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage day-to-day operations for multiple water and wastewater facilities, including treatment plants, pump stations, sewer and storm networks and pipelines.
- Plan, coordinate and supervise construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects, ensuring work is completed on time, on budget and to required standards.
- Develop and manage area budgets, forecasting, resource allocation and cost control to meet financial and operational targets.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental and public health regulations, permits and reporting requirements. Maintain accurate records and prepare regulatory submissions as required.
- Implement and oversee asset management strategies, preventive maintenance programs and condition monitoring to extend asset life and reduce unplanned outages.
- Recruit, develop and lead multidisciplinary teams; set objectives, conduct performance reviews and promote a safety-first culture.
- Respond to emergencies and incidents (e.g., overflows, contamination, major outages); coordinate rapid response and recovery activities and liaise with emergency services and regulators.
- Drive continuous improvement through process optimization, standardization, lessons learned and adoption of best practices and new technologies.
- Engage with stakeholders including customers, local authorities, contractors and community groups to maintain positive relationships and support project delivery.
- Monitor performance against KPIs and SLAs, prepare operational reports, and present insights and recommendations to senior management.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in water and/or wastewater operations, with demonstrated experience managing multiple sites or an operational area.
- Proven experience with treatment plant operations and process control for water and wastewater treatment.
- Strong knowledge of sewer, stormwater and pipeline systems, including construction, maintenance and inspection practices.
- Familiarity with local and national environmental and public health regulations, permitting and reporting requirements.
- Experience managing construction and capital works projects, contractor management and procurement processes.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with experience building and developing high-performing teams and promoting health & safety and compliance cultures.
- Financial management skills including budgeting, forecasting and cost control.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with ability to represent the organization to regulators, customers and community groups.
- Relevant certifications preferred (e.g., water/wastewater operator certification, project management certification).
