Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Location: Long Island, NY
Job Type: Part time, 6 hours/week
Pay: $56/Hour

Key Responsibilities:
Instruction and Support:

• Provide direct instruction to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in various settings, including self-contained classrooms, resource rooms, and general education classrooms.
• Adapt and modify curriculum and instructional materials to meet the needs of students.
• Utilize appropriate munication methods, such as American Sign Language (ASL), cued speech, oral/aural methods, or other assistive technologies, based on students' individual needs.
• Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that promotes the academic, social, and emotional development of students.

Individualized Education Programs (IEPs):

• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to assess students' needs and develop, implement, and review IEPs.
• Set realistic and achievable goals for students, monitor progress, and adjust instruction as needed.
• Participate in IEP meetings with families, administrators, and other professionals.

Collaboration and munication:

• Work closely with general education teachers to ensure students have access to the general curriculum.
• Provide consultation and support to school staff regarding best practices for working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• municate regularly with parents and guardians to update them on their childs progress and provide strategies for support at home.
• Collaborate with speech and language therapists, audiologists, and other specialists as needed.

Professional Development:

• Stay current with best practices in the field of deaf education through ongoing professional development.
• Attend workshops, conferences, and training sessions as required by the school district or educational organization.

Advocacy and Inclusion:

• Advocate for the needs of students who are deaf or hard of hearing within the school and munity.
• Promote inclusion and raise awareness about hearing impairments among peers and staff.

Qualifications:

• Education: Bachelors or Masters degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field.
• Certification: Valid New York State certification as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
• Experience: Previous experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing is preferred.

Skills:

• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) or other munication methods.
• Strong understanding of assistive technologies for students with hearing impairments.
• Excellent munication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and multidisciplinary teams.
