JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: Ophthalmic Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Clinical
REPORTS TO: Lead Ophthalmic Technician
JOB SUMMARY:
This individual is responsible for providing chair-side doctor assistance,
performing diagnostic tests as required by Ophthalmologist, and
administering treatment as allowed and ordered by the physician.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Two years experience in a healthcare setting; ophthalmology preferred.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of medical and ophthalmic terminology.
2. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
3. Positive team member.
4. Strong organization with an attention to detail.
5. Demonstrated computer literacy.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Communication and Patient Care
a. Uses autorefractor and lensometers (automatic and manual).
b. Performs visual field tests.
c. Performs visual acuity and pinhole tests.
d. Perform brightness acuity measurement as requested by the physician.
e. Performs Schirmer's tests as ordered by the physician.
f. Monitors patient flow, ensuring the physician exam rooms are always full.
g. Acts as scribe for the physician.
h. Escorts patients to the front desk after the exam.
2. Patient Education
a. Reviews the use of Amsler grid testing with patients for at-home monitoring.
b. Reviews physician-generated instructions with patients.
c. Provides appropriate patient education materials as directed by the physician.
3. Administrative
a. Ensures that exam rooms are tidied between patients, including cleaning sinks and sanitizing equipment.
b. Cleans all lenses used by doctors.
c. Prepares for COA exam.

St. Michael's is a fully equipped, state-of-the-art medical practice housing some of the most experienced and skilled vision care specialists. St. Michael's four highly trained ophthalmologists have over 100 years in combined experience in performing the most advanced and complete medical/surgical care for the eye.
St. Michael's office is located at 1030 West Bay Drive Largo, Florida. The 12,000 square foot office includes fifteen examination rooms, five testing/procedures rooms, a full-service eye clinic, full-service optical department and state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging and treatment equipment including optical coherence tomography, ocular/retinal angiography, Excimer laser, retinal thermal laser and YAG and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) lasers.
Located on the same campus as St. Michael's office is the 7,500 square foot AAAHC accredited St. Michael’s Surgery Center which includes three operating rooms and one procedure room. SMS is separately licensed and accredited as a freestanding Ambulatory Surgery Center that is 100% dedicated to providing ocular/eye surgery.
St. Michael's Surgery Center is equipped with complex/advanced equipment including two Zeiss Opmi Lumera surgical microscope systems (only University of South Florida has this level of technology in the Tampa Bay area), a Centurion Cataract Vision System (only three in the Tampa Bay area) and an Alcon Constellation Vision System (only three in the Tampa Bay area). St. Michael's Surgery Center complex/advanced ocular/eye equipment and highly trained ocular/eye surgery clinical staff results in St. Michael's Surgery Center providing more complex/advanced ocular/eye surgery than other ASCs in the area including complex cataract surgery, corneal transplants, eye shunt implants, revision of the iris, endoscopic ablation, retinal detachment surgery and vitreous hemorrhage surgery.
