Position Summary:
The Chemotherapy Infusion Nurse is responsible for administering chemotherapy and other medications to patients undergoing cancer treatment and other illnesses. This role involves close interaction with patients, providing compassionate care, education, and support throughout their treatment journey. The Chemotherapy Infusion Nurse must possess strong clinical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care:
Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, fluids, antibiotics, blood, IV push medications, and other oncology medications as prescribed by physicians.
Monitor patients for adverse reactions to treatments and provide appropriate interventions.
Perform assessments and document patient responses to treatment.
Educate patients and their families about medication and chemotherapy, side effects, and self-care measures.
Provide emotional support and counseling to patients and their families.
Clinical Duties:
Prepare and manage intravenous (IV) infusions, injections, and other treatments.
Ensure accurate dosage and administration of medications.
Maintain sterility and safety protocols during all procedures.
Collaborate with oncology physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
Participate in patient care planning and interdisciplinary team meetings.
Participate in clinic tele-visits.
Clean and maintain infusion rooms after patient visits.
Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including treatment plans, medication administration, and patient responses.
Report any changes in patient condition to the appropriate medical staff promptly.
Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
Professional Development:
Stay current with advances in oncology nursing and infusion therapy.
Attend continuing education programs and workshops.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and research projects as needed.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) considered with relevant experience.
Licensure/Certification:
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in [State].
Oncology Nursing Certification (OCN) preferred but will train and certify you.
Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, with at least 1 year in oncology or infusion therapy preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
Strong clinical skills and knowledge of IV medications and chemotherapy protocols and oncology medications.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to handle emotionally charged situations with compassion and professionalism.
Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a clinical setting with exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials.
Requires standing, walking, and the ability to lift and move patients.
May involve occasional evening or weekend shifts as needed.
