Position Summary of the HIM Academic Specialist:

The Academic Specialist is responsible for empowering students to achieve their innate greatness by offering individualized and course level, support, guidance, feedback, and instruction. The Academic Specialist assists the course instructor and Program Director with creating a learning community in which students feel connected to their peers, instructors, and the university. Within the context of the course(s), the Academic Specialist provides one on one tutoring sessions, and develops supporting instructional materials and workshops as needed. The Academic Specialist reports to the Program Director and meets regularly with the course instructor(s), Academic Consultants and Student Success Coaches to review and create an action plan for high-risk students. Academic Specialists must be trustworthy, reliable, detail-oriented, collaborative, take initiative, and possess a positive attitude. They are committed to reflection and growth in their practices.

Responsibilities of the HIM Academic Specialist:

• Work with Faculty and Program Directors to motivate students and liberate their inner greatness.
• Demonstrate growth mindset consistently in work performed; become a role model for others to aspire to. CORE VALUES:
• Help identify gaps in learning and create additional support materials, such as video tutorials, as needed for assignment help or as directed by the Instructor or Program Director.
• Provide additional support for navigation skills with technology.
• Conduct proactive and reactive student outreach regularly and provide timely feedback to the instructor on student situations or opportunities.
• Actively engage in the individual, or small group, tutoring, and remediation using the classroom discussion forums, phone, email, or Zoom.
• Complete special projects as requested, including workshops, presentations, and other duties as assigned. o Provide individualized and timely feedback within the course discussion forum.
• Engage with students as an active member of the community within the course.
• Be friendly, approachable, caring, and supportive of students.
• Act as the "go-to" person for course questions; become a role model for students.
• Academic Specialist tutoring sessions are accurately maintained and up to date.
• Independently manage work schedules and keep track of time worked.
• Interdepartmental activities are effectively coordinated through collaboration with peers and associates.
• Appropriate confidentiality is maintained when working with students, instructors, and administrative staff.
• All federal, state, accreditation, and institutional regulations, policy and procedures are met.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements of the HIM Academic Specialist:

• Bachelor’s in science in Health Information Management, Data Analytics, Public Health, or Statistics.
• One or more of the following certifications: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CAHIMS, CPHIMS, CHES.
• Dynamic communicator, coach, and role model with a focus on student-centered, adaptive development.
• Strong presentation and organizational skills in a remote environment.
• Reliable internet access must use Camera enabled PC (no MAC).
• Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a collaborative environment.
• Skills include discrete mathematics, data analysis and interpretation, descriptive and inferential statistics, problem solving, critical thinking.
• Must have a passion for education and the ability to thrive in an atmosphere of innovation and change.
• Ability to work in a virtual environment using software technology including but not limited to virtual meeting tools, such as Zoom, Instant Messaging, Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), Microsoft Office and video creation software.
• Ability to operate a computer and its peripheral equipment (printers, keyboard, mouse, etc.).
• Ability to work 10 to 19 hours per week (not to exceed 38 hours within a 14-day pay period without prior approval from the Program Director).
• Ability to sit or stand for four to six hours.
