POSITION: Assistant Principal for Elementary School

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Master's degree required

2. School Building Leader degree preferred

3. At least five years of teaching in urban schools

4. Administrative experience in urban schools

5. Experience working with teachers on curriculum implementation and student behavior

6. Strong organization and communication skills

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Principal will be responsible for student oversight of academic and behavioral needs as well as strengthening and maintaining the school and student culture philosophy. The Assistant Principal will work with the school community including teachers, students, parents and guardians. In addition, s/he will serve as the interface between the school and the students' homes, ensuring consistent and timely communication from the school. S/he will also be responsible for monitoring student assessments and achievements.

  • Work with Principal, Assistant Principal and Instructional Coach to support teacher's planning and implementation of curriculum including specialists and support providers.
  • Work closely with the Leadership team including the Principal, Assistant Principal (K-1st grades), Parent Coordinator and Director of Operations.
  • Coordinate with the Dean of School Culture, School Counselor and staff to strengthen and maintain Academy of the City Charter School's culture.
  • Work with teachers, especially new teachers to assist in understanding the mission and vision of the School and acclimating to the school culture.
  • Develop and implement behavioral plans in the classroom for children who are having difficulties in the classroom setting with the classroom teacher, Dean of School Culture and School Counselor.
  • Meet and discuss academic and behavioral expectations with parents, when necessary.

SALARY: Commensurate with experience

Opened in the fall of 2011, Academy of the City Charter School is a tuition-free, community-based public charter school originally located in Long Island City in western Queens. We launched our school year with just over 100 students. In August 2013, Academy of the City moved to our new permanent location in Woodside. Here we have space to offer a classroom spaces for art, music, physical education and science. We also have a library with over 5,000 volumes and computer lab staffed by a librarian/technology teacher.

We have been named a Reward School by the NYS Education Department in 2017, 2018 and 2019 in making the most progress with no significant gaps in student achievement. With our progressive educational model, the Academy’s goal is to motivate and prepare students to engage in a lifelong love affair with learning, resulting in a meaningful and productive life. Our teachers are firmly committed to empowering students to embrace their proficiencies, skills, and interests, and to eventually take their place as citizens of today’s increasingly global world.
